Boatshed Build Considerations

A general checklist to start the process off.

Here’s a few question to consider as you make your plans to replace or establish your new shed and jetty facilities. Answering each will help to determine the best solution for your needs.

Scheduling a call with us to discuss these and other questions will help you to determine your requirements. Feel free to contact us to make a time to discuss your boatshed options.

  • What’s to be stored? What size will allow it to all fit adequately?
  • Sea access via floating ramp or piled slipway?
  • Do you need a warranty for your metal roofing & cladding (ask us why this is an important question)?
  • How easy is shore access? Will you need consent for an access track or luggage trolley?
  • Do you have existing consented structures to build up to or against?
  • Winch & trailer, hand dolly or more elaborate solution?
  • New jetty with floating pontoon to be factored into footprint as well?
  • Decking (& cladding) in pine or sustainable hardwood?
  • Sectional, roller or swing front doors? And don’t forget the rear or side door requirement.
  • Flooring and lining options.

We can help to prepare and file your resource consent, and liaise with local engineers on your behalf. Experienced marine engineers will oversee the drafting of your drawings and undertake the necessary site visits, plus file your building consent application.

We can recommend an engineer, and sub-trades such as civil works contractors, electricians, and we’ll arrange certified scaffolding and roofers.

Pier Two can oversee your boatshed project from concept, through the consent applications, to piling and framing through to wrapping, then oversee roofing and sub-trades through to scaffold removal.

Getting your Boatshed Consents underway

We have documents to assist you to update any shared ownership details, affected persons approval, and for other mandatory information. We are here to help make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.

Renovation or replacement of your existing boatshed, or a new build requires (at a minimum):

  • a new application for a Resource Consent – Coastal Permit for each structure with detailed description supporting the application,
  • a Building Consent (Band F fees),
  • full structure details and measurements,
  • accurate site plan or drawings (and photographs if existing) of the proposed foreshore structures,
  • an inspection report if for an existing boatshed, detailing all remedial work and maintenance work required to keep the jetty fit for purpose,
  • an assessment of RMA-related effects on the environment and NZ Coastal Plan policy,
  • Coastal Permit details for any related moorings,
  • DOC concession or lease depending on location (this may take many months so is critical to investigate early),
  • Any Affected Party approvals, and
  • Other supporting documents as may be sought by MDC.

We can prepare and lodge your Resource Consent for you, and we can work with a local engineer to draft drawings and liaise with other parties on your behalf. As well as being your Marlborough Sounds Boatshed Builders, we can construct your jetty, pontoon, linkspan and boatshed ramp and coordinate the entire building project.
